Short Ride Through Chuckanut Dr

I was originally planning to tour the South of Vancouver Island, BC this weekend. However, come Saturday morning, and it was raining. So, with Sunday still looking sunny, I decided to just chill-out for Saturday and go for a ride on Sunday to Winthrop, WA. Again, come Sunday morning, no sun at all, with possible showers. The forecast did “predict” a sunny afternoon. So, I opted to go for a ~230Km short ride down to Chuckanut, WA. I’ve never been down that area. It’s rather a very calm ride. To get there, I went down the I5, stopped by Lowe’s @ Bellingham, WA, where I picked a couple of DuPont Chain lube. This product keeps receiving great reviews. So, I thought let me get a couple of cans, to try it out myself. Then, from Bellingham, WA, I rode down to the Chuckanut junction in Alger, WA, then headed North on Hwy 11, aka Chuckanut Drive. Chuckanut Drive kind of terminates @ Fairhaven, WA. The latter being a nice little town, a nice place for a breakfast/brunch/lunch/dinner stop.

Photos: Riots, fire, destruction after Vancouver’s loss

I never thought the Vancouverites had it in them. In the words of Bart Simpson “Smashy Smashy“. Photos here.

Diving Near Bowyer Island

I went for a dive today; first of the year. Usually, by this time of the year; I would have done a few dives already. However, Marc had sold his old boat, and has gotten a new one, and it’s only now that the new boat was ready to be taken out. We went diving near Bowyer Island, BC. The first dive was about South-East of the island. Visibility was not good. So, we moved up about North-West of the Island; hoping for better visibility, but it was pretty much the same. It was cloudy as well, so no sunshine at all. Still fun though.

The Reverse Desert Loop

First time doing this loop: Vancouver, Lytton, Lillooet, Ashcroft, Logan Lake, then back to Vancouver.

I had started my trip later than planned, so I skipped Lillooet, BC. Total round trip distance ~700Km. A very enjoyable ride. A few PoPos just before Ashcorft, BC and Logan Lake, BC.

About 30Km south of Ashcroft, BC, I saw this bear chilling around. I pulled a U-turn on the highway and turned back to take a few snapshots. The bear looked at me, it didn’t seem bothered. I had hoped it would dance or something for me, but no. It just kept wandering around; looking for food perhaps.

Mount Baker Run

I went for a short little ride to Mount Baker, WA. The run is ~300Km long. It was a beautiful sunny day, a little on the cooler side. Also, the Canucks were playing today (Game #2 of the Stanley Cup Final. Go Canucks Go!), so everybody was staying in the city; to watch the game in the evening, which translated to no waits at the CAN-US border crossings.

Once one crosses the US border @ the Sumas, WA crossings; there are rather nice back roads, that eventually take you up; through the twisty roads, to Mount Baker.

Home Sweet Home

I’ve spent 3 weeks this time in Santa Clara, CA. That’s 5 weeks out of the last 6 weeks were spent down in Silicon Valley. I would have rather enjoyed my time being there if it wasn’t for my academic engagements; that now I’m worried I won’t have time to complete on time; due to this business trip.

One cool thing happened on my flight back; from San Francisco, CA to Vancouver, BC; while I was sitting there reading a book on the plane, I just happened to glance through the window (I was sitting on the right side of the plane), and I saw in the near distance, a natural structure that I recognized immediately: Crater Lake, OR. I’ve been to that lake a few months back, when I rode down to Silicon Valley on my motorcycle, in one of my business trips. Luckily, the seats next to me where empty, so I got up, went to my carry-on (stored on those top closets), and grabbed my camera, went back to my seat, and snapped a shot. Oh NO! The flash was on, and the lake is disappearing under the wing of the plane. I turned off the camera flash, and took another shot. Crap, most of the lake is covered by the airplane’s right wing. So, I got out of my seat, and rushed towards the back of the plane, where I found a couple of empty seats, and grabbed a couple more shots.

Egypt…

I’m back from a two-week vacation in Egypt; third visit. And WOW! What a vacation that was! Spirituality, action, suspense, comedy, drama, romance and perhaps a couple of broken hearts.

You take care of yourself S.
